N.C. COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE 4-H CAMPS The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service—Alexander 4-H program announces their summer educational programs for youth. Participation is not limited to 4-H members. Call the NC Cooperative Extension Office in Alexander County to register at 828-632-3125. All county day camps except Horsemanship Day Camps begin the day at the NC Cooperative Extension Center- Alexander County. HORSEMANSHIP DAY CAMPS (English Hunt Seat Style)-- will be held at Foothills Equestrian Center in Bethlehem (Alexander County) for youth ages 9 years and older of all riding abilities (beginner to advanced). No prior riding experience required. This is the 19th year that the camp has been in existence. Call the 4-H Office 632-3125 for special horse camp application. Camp Format: 8:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Activities include riding lessons, stable management instruction, classroom work, and crafts. Snack is provided.DATES OF CAMPS: June 16-20; June 23-27; July 14-18. Cost is $90, which includes all program fees, insurance, snack. Camp size is limited to 32 campers per week. CLOVERBUD (5-9 YEAR OLDS ) HORSEMANSHIP DAY CAMP (Western Style)-- will be held at Hobby Horse Equestrian Plantation in Bethlehem (Alexander County) for youth ages 5-9 years. No prior riding experience required. Transportation is provided from Extension Center in Taylorsville Camp Format: 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Activities include riding lessons, stable management instruction, and classroom instruction/crafts. Snack is provided.DATES OF CAMP: June 23-27. Cost is $90, which includes all program fees, insurance, snack. Transportation is provided from Extension Center in Taylorsville. Camp size is limited to 12 campers. PENN 4-H CAMP—June 15-20-- Week long overnight camp designed for youth ages 8-14 years old. This is an American Camping Association Accredited Camp is located near Reidsville, North Carolina. Daily activities include swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, ecology, crafts, and much more. Cost is $230 for Alexander County residents and $285 for surrounding counties. A $50 deposit is required by April 1. The price includes transportation, insurance, meals while at camp and all program expenses. All campers are required to have had a physical within 24 months of the camp date. We currently have limited spaces FUN WITH FABRICS & QUILTING TOO!—June 23, 24, 26, 27 (no class on Wed.) ; 9 a.m.—2 p.m; Cost is $10. Sewing machine and sewing notions must be provided by participant. All other project materials will be furnished. This year we will concentrate on even straight seams as we make a few lap quilts for the elderly. We will add a few fun items to make for ourselves while we are taking turns on the large quilting. Wednesday will not be a camp day due to District Activity Day where we will be encouraged to attend for presentations. Limited to 8 youth, ages 8 years and older. Participants must bring a bag lunch and a drink. Location: Extension Learning Center. DISCOVERY DAY CAMP—July 7-11-- Come join youth from Alexander, Catawba and Iredell Counties in 5 days of discovery from 8 a.m.—4 p.m. Program is designed for youth ages 6-13 years old. Each day a different county hosts the daily activities usually including an educational and recreational activity. Monday- Alexander County Day: Gem Mining and an afternoon of canoe instruction, craft and water biology class; Tuesday-Iredell County Day: Tour Fort Dobbs Historical Site to learn about Revolutionary War life followed by an afternoon of bowling; Wednesday- Catawba County Day: Bird Brain Ostrich Farm followed by putt putt and bumper boats at Queen’s Landidng; Thursday- Lazy 5 Ranch- Youth will take a hayride through the exotic animal ranch followed by hands on exhibits of farm animals. Youth will participate in an afternoon of swimming, Friday- Anita Alta 4-H Camp Day in Caldwell County- learn how to canoe, participate in a low ropes course and learn about wildlife habitats. Transportation is provided from Extension Center. Cost is $18 per day or $90 for the week. Participants must furnish a lunch and a drink. You may sign up for one or all days of the camp. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN- July 14-18; 9 a.m. —12 noon-- Ages 8-up; Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. Cost is $30. Limited to 12 youth. There will be hands-on experiences in which youth learn basic cooking skills, food safety and nutrition. Each day includes crafts, games, food preparation and tasting. There will be at least one field trip. ANITA-ALTA 4-H DAY CAMP-- July 14-18; 8 a.m. —4:30 pm-- This day camp is designed for youth ages 8-12 years old. The camp will be held at Anita-Alta 4-H Camp in Caldwell County. Transportation will be provided from the Alexander County Extension Office each day for campers. Activities include canoeing on a pond, fishing, beaver study, archery, crafts, hiking, stream ecology, forestry, low ropes course, outdoor cookery and lots more. Cost is $85 for the week. Campers must provide a lunch and drink for each day. SUPER SITTERS WORKSHOP-- July 23, 8-4 p.m. This one day clinic is for youth ages 11 and older interested in future babysitting.. Topics covered include creative play, discipline, first aid and safety. Cost is $10.
4-H20 DAY CAMP—July 28-August 1 ; 8 a.m.—2 p.m.-- Youth will learn about water and related environmental quality areas. Sessions will be using pontoon boats on Lake Hickory; beginning canoe trip on local river, advanced water biology and testing skills and advanced macro-invertebrate identification . Campers will enjoy a day long canoe trip on river in a nearby county followed by an overnight campout at a local 4-H outpost camp. Time will be available most days for youth to fish. . Ages 9-up. Cost is $65. Transportation will be provided from the Extension Office to camp locations. Campers must provide a bag lunch and a drink for each day. Limited to 10 campers. LETTERBOXING – August 4-8; 9 a.m.-12 noon -- Age: 6 year old and above; Cost: $25 per childThis camp will explore the international hobby of letterboxing. Letterboxing is a “treasure hunt” outdoor activity in which the whole family can be involved. It combines navigational skills along with artistry and creativity. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues, and then record their discovery in their personal journal with the help of a rubber stamp that's part of the letterbox. In addition, letterboxers have their own personal stamps which they use to stamp into the letterbox's logbook. The group will be traveling at times to locate and place letterboxes. We request that closed toe shoes/sneakers be worn at all times to protect campers feet as many letterboxes are located in woodland settings. Snacks will be provided each day. We will meet at the Extension Office for classes and depart from there for letterboxing excursions. 4-H SCIENCE EXPLORATION WORKSHOPS – August 4-8; 1:00-5:00 p.m , Cost $10 per day. August 4- Beginning Power Point- learn the basics of power point and learn to prepare your own program.--Ages 12-up; FULLAugust 5- Photography- Bring your camera and learn the basics of photography—Ages- 8-up; FULL.August 6- Building Your Own DNA Blueprint-learn about the science of DNA through hands on experiments;Ages- 8- up; FULLAugust 7- Worms Eat Your Garbage- Learn about vermicomposting and make a worm compost bin to take home. Ages: 8-up;August 8- Engineering and Design- Learn to design, plan, build and test different types of items to learn the basics of engineering. Ages: 8-up. FULL. HANDS TO SERVICE -- August 11-12; 9 a.m.—12 noon-- Learn different ways to help in your community. Youth will participate in various service learning projects each day. Each day will involve youth traveling throughout the community doing service learning activities. Limited to 10 participants; ages 9 years old and up. (Youth ages 8 years and younger can attend if accompanied by an adult). Cost is $20. Location: Extension Learning Center. FULL
SCRAPBOOK THOSE SUMMER MEMORIES-- August 11 & 12th ; 1-4 p.m. -- Cost: $25.00. This workshop is a workshop that allows you to preserve those summer fun photos. We have a lot of fun, and lots of scrapbook pages are completed during these events. Each participant will receive a 12 x12 scrapbook and all the supplies you will need to complete your pages. Campers participate in canoeing, swimming, archery, climbing wall, horseback riding, and environmental classes. Evening Programs consist of a Talent Show, Campfire, and Games. Whitewater adventures Ages: 13-17 dates: AUG 10-15 Cost: $610Participants will receive instruction on paddling techniques and water safety on the lake. The group will hone their skills canoeing down the Mayo River. The pinnacle of this trip will be a guided whitewater adventure, rafting the French Broad. Participants must be in good physical condition and be able to swim. leader-in-training Ages: 15-17 Cost: $375The L.I.T. program was developed to help guide youth as they develop their leadership skills. The program will increase awareness of personal responsibility and character development. The program is designed to provide youth with leadership skills in a residential camp setting. L.I.T’s will be assigned to a staff mentor for the week. They will spend part of their time working on program set-up, team building, high ropes, and other leadership opportunities. There are 6 spaces, 3 boys and 3 girls, available most weeks. Contact the center for a complete application. EASTERN 4-H CENTER- Columbia, North Carolina4-H Summer CampJune 22-27, June 29-July 4, and July 6-11 Ages 8-12 Cost $395 per weekOur hallmark Summer Camp program is proud to offer an outdoor learning experience to campers which focuses on experiential education. Age appropriate programs are offered to small activity groups in a way that combines fun and education. Campers have many options – from our low and high ropes course to fishing or ecology. With our diverse recreation programming, there are many great options for everyone. Evening activities range from talent shows, International night, to our traditional campfires. Many of our activities are experiences that campers have yet to experience, like crabbing or campouts! Campers also help the Eastern 4-H Center build on its young but growing traditions. Adventure CampJune 22-27, June 29-July 4, and July 6-11 Ages 13-14 Cost $395 per weekAdventure Camp is the perfect experience for youth who love camp but have aged out of traditional summer camp programs. Programming is tailored to improve on skills that have already been acquired. Learning new canoeing techniques, backpacking and campouts, or the climbing wall are just a few ways Adventure Campers might spend their days. Team work and communication skills are put to the test on an overnight canoeing trip. Adventure Camp is a fantastic way to spend a week at the Eastern 4-H Center. L-i-T Adventures (Leaders in Training) June 22-27, June 29-July 4, and July 6-11 Ages 15-17 Cost $395 Limit 6 per sessionThe LIT program (Leaders in Training) is a week long experience for participants who are between 15 and 17 years old. The LIT program is designed to teach participants personal responsibility and character development. Participants will help out in the cabins, program areas, and at meals. LIT’s will assist staff in many ways, but will also assist campers throughout their visit.

At the Eastern 4-H Center, learning takes center stage in an effort to provide a unique and fun experience. Whether studying fish in the Wet Lab, examining tiny creatures under a microscope, or learning to use the winds to navigate the beautiful Albemarle Sound, Marine Science and Sailing Camp will certainly “WET” your appetite for all things aquatic. Cloverbud CampJune 29-July 3 Ages 5-8 Cost $225 Limit 50 campersAn adventure-filled 5 day/4 night experience is perfect for younger campers and first time campers. Our increased camper to staff ratios and smaller activity groups allow us to meet the unique needs of youngsters. Cloverbud campers get to experience the traditional summer camp programs offered at the Eastern 4-H Center. CAMP canvasbackJuly 13-18 Ages: 12-17 Cost: Call for feeCamp Canvasback is the perfect opportunity for the younger outdoor enthusiast to become knowledgeable in wetland conservation and hunting safety. With help from the North Carolina Waterfowl Association and the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, Camp Canvasback spotlights North Carolina’s waterfowl along with proper hunter education, safe gun use, and waterfowl conservation. Participants will have the opportunity to earn their hunter education card, learn many waterfowl species, and gain valuable safe shooting techniques. Improve your horsemanship skills while having fun with other 4-H’ers. A qualified camp staff will introduce the beginning rider to the basics of horsemanship. Advanced riders learn new and better horsemanship skills and showing techniques. Horse camp includes educational lectures, riding lessons, trail rides and training demonstrations, in addition to traditional camp activities. Instruction will be given in hunt seat and western styles. Other Project camp (open enrollment)July 13-18 Ages 8-12 Cost: $275 Open to all youth, you don’t have to be a 4-H member to participate. Campers will be able to choose a 4-H project area such as; Entomology, Eco Adventure, Forests of Fun, Wood Working, Discovering Plants, Electric, Fishing, and others. Regular camp activities including swimming, canoeing, archery, rifle, crafts, nature, and horseback riding will also be a part of this camp.

Trekker ProgramAges 13-15The Trekker Program is an adventure-based program that allows campers to go beyond the “traditional” Resident camp program and reach new heights. Trekkers will learn leadership, outdoor living skills, orienteering, participate in teambuilding activities, and rock climbing. Campers in this program will be camping and traveling off site during part of the week. This program is designed for youth that want to expand their comfort zone and who enjoy being outside in nature. Cloverbud july 13-16 Ages 5-8 cost: $175Cloverbud is for campers not yet ready for a full week of the camping experience. During this half-week session, campers participate in swimming, archery, craft, Appalachian heritage, environmental exploration, and more. Professionals in the field will teach campers basic forestry including tree identification, forest conservation, and wildlife management. Campers will also enjoy craft, swimming, archery, games and all the fun of traditional camp. Sertoma 4-H CENTERSertoma deaf campDate: June 22-27 Ages 8-16 Cost: $350This camp is sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Regions Sertoma Clubs. This camp is open to any child that is speech or hearing impared.
