NC COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE 4-H CAMPS Alexander County4-H SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH
The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service—Alexander 4-H program announces their summer educational programs for youth.
Participation is not limited to 4-H members. Call the NC Cooperative Extension Office in Alexander County to register at 828-632-3125. All county day camps except Horsemanship Day Camps begin the day at the NC Cooperative Extension Center - Alexander County.
CLOVERBUD (5-9 YEAR OLDS) HORSEMANSHIP DAY CAMPS (Western Style) -- will be held at Hobby Horse Equestrian Plantation in Bethlehem (Alexander County) for youth ages 5-9 years. No prior riding experience required. Camp Format: 8:00 am -- 12:00 pm. Activities include riding lessons, stable management instruction, and classroom instruction/crafts. Snack is provided. DATES OF CAMP: August 3-7. Cost is $90, which includes all program fees, insurance, snack. Transportation is provided from Extension Center in Taylorsville. Camp size is limited to 15 campers. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN- June 15-18 - 9 am —12 noon-- Ages 7-9; NC Cooperative Extension Center. Cost is $25. Limited to 9 youth. There will be hands-on experiences in which youth learn basic cooking skills, food safety and nutrition. Each day includes crafts, games, food preparation and tasting. There will be at least one field trip. HORSEMANSHIP DAY CAMP (Western Style) -- will be held at Hobby Horse Equestrian Plantation in Bethlehem (Alexander County) for youth ages 9 years and older of all riding abilities (beginner to advanced). No prior riding experience required. Camp Format: 8:00 am -- 12:00 pm-- Activities include riding lessons, stable management instruction, crafts and outdoor hiking. Snack is provided. DATES OF CAMP: June 22-26. Cost is $90, which includes all program fees, insurance, snack. Camp size is limited to 24 campers per week. PENN 4-H CAMP—June 29-July 3rd-- Week long overnight camp designed for youth ages 8-14 years old. This is an American Camping Association Accredited Camp is located near Reidsville, North Carolina. Daily activities include swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, ecology, crafts, and much more. Cost is $250 for Alexander County residents and $300 for surrounding counties. A $50 deposit is required by April 1. The price includes transportation, insurance, meals while at camp and all program expenses. All campers are required to have had a physical within 24 months of the camp date. We currently have limited spaces. DISCOVERY DAY CAMP—July 6-10-- Come join youth from Alexander, Catawba and Iredell Counties in 5 days of discovery from 8 am—4 pm. Program is designed for youth ages 6-13 years old. Each day a different county hosts the daily activities usually including an educational and recreational activity. Monday- Alexander County Day: Gem Mining and an afternoon of canoe instruction, craft and science related activity; Tuesday- Iredell County Day: Lake Norman State Park wildlife educational program followed by an afternoon of bowling; Wednesday- Catawba County Day: Tour Buffalo Beal’s Animal Park with an afternoon of roller skating at Skateland USA; Thursday- Lazy 5 Ranch- Youth will take a hayride through the exotic animal ranch followed by hands on exhibits of farm animals. Youth will participate in an afternoon of swimming, Friday-SCI-Works-Youth will visit hands on museum and plantetarium show in Winston Salem. Transportation is provided from Extension Center. Cost is $18 per day or $90 for the week. Participants must furnish a lunch and a drink. You may sign up for one or all days of the camp. Limited to 12 campers. (At this time this camp is full) KIDS IN THE KITCHEN – Beyond the Basics- July 13-17; 9 am —12 noon-- Ages 9-up; NC Cooperative Extension Center. Cost is $30. Limited to 12 youth. There will be hands-on experiences in which youth learn cooking skills beyond basic level. Food safety and nutrition emphasized. Each day includes crafts, games, food preparation and tasting. There will be at least one field trip. 4-H SCIENCE EXPLORATION WORKSHOPS – July 13-17; 1:00-5:00 pm, Cost is $10 per day except for Rocks & Gems- $15. July 13- Acres of Agriculture- learn the basics of where your food and fiber comes from through hands on activities and experiments..--Ages 12-up; Limited to 12 youth. July 14- Fishing Around Alexander County- Bring your fishing rod and fish in various fishing locations in Alexander County. Prizes will be awarded to youth. Bait will be provided.—Ages- 8-up; Limited to 10 youth. July 15- Rocks & Gems-learn about basics of soil science, rocks and gems. A field trip to Hiddenite Emerald Mines will also be provided.—Ages- 8-up; Limited to 12 youth. July 16-Engineering- Learn about engineering basic principles through hands on experiments and activities. Ages: 8-up; Limited to 12 youth. July 17- Magic of Electricity- Learn about the magic of electricity through hands on science experiments. Ages: 8-up; Limited to 12 youth. 4-H20 DAY CAMP—July 27-31; 8 am—2 pm-- Ages 9-up. Youth will learn about water and related environmental quality areas. Sessions will involve canoeing on local rivers, advanced water biology and testing skills and advanced macro-invertebrate identification. Campers will enjoy a day long canoe trip on river in a nearby county followed by an overnight campout at a local state park. Time will be available most days for youth to fish. Cost is $70. Transportation will be provided from the Extension Office to camp locations. Campers must provide a bag lunch and a drink for each day. Limited to 10 campers. FUN WITH FABRICS & QUILTING TOO! – August 3-7; 9 am—2 pm; Cost is $12 Sewing machine and sewing notions must be provided by participant. All other project materials will be furnished. This year we will concentrate on making a t-shirt quilt. Participants can bring in their own t-shirts to make their own quilt. If you don’t have t-shirts available, please let the 4-H Office know so shirts can be secured. Limited to 8 youth, ages 8 years and older. Participants must bring a bag lunch and a drink. Location: Extension Learning Center. HORSEMANSHIP DAY CAMP (Hunt Seat Style)-- will be held at Foothills Equestrian Center in Bethlehem (Alexander County) for youth ages 9 years and older of all riding abilities (beginner to advanced). No prior riding experience required. This is the 21th year that the camp has been in existence. Camp Format: 8:00 am - 12:30 pm. Activities include riding lessons, stable management instruction, classroom work, and crafts. Snack is provided. DATES OF CAMP: August 3-7. Cost is $90, which includes all program fees, insurance, snack. Camp size is limited to 24 campers per week. GIS/GPS- August 10-12th; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $35. -- Learners will discover GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and will use GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. Activities include computer lab instruction, field trips in Alexander County, and hands-on GPS activities. Limited to 12 youth; Rising 7 graders-12th graders; Instructor: Eric Walker, ACHS GIS Instructor. Location: Extension Learning Center, ACHS and various locations in Alexander County. HANDS TO SERVICE -- August 17-19; 9 am—12 noon-- Learn different ways to help in your community. Youth will participate in various service learning projects each day. Each day will involve youth traveling throughout the community doing service learning activities. Limited to 10 participants; ages 9 years old and up. (Youth ages 8 years and younger can attend if accompanied by an adult). Cost is $25. Location: Extension Learning Center. |
