Raised Bed Garden Project
The first harvest session provided healthy garden salads of leaf lettuce, radishes, and onions, enhanced by strawberries and fresh herbs. All produce harvested was carefully weighed. To date, 15 pounds of produce have been gathered.
Stop by anytime and take a look for yourself at this demonstration garden and observe the arrival of yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes and eggplant.

the local Farmer’s Market and see examples of the produce harvested from these beds. You’ll have a chance to meet some the young gardener’s involved. The Alexander County Farmer’s Market will open Thursday, July 10, in the parking lot of the former Alexander County Hospital, Highway 16 South.

N.C. Cooperative Extension’s raised bed gardens were installed last spring by Alexander County Master Gardeners. Thanks to another grant from Taylorsville Wal-Mart, the 2008 garden project got underway in March. The young gardeners are 4th and 5th grade students enrolled in the after school program at Taylorsville Elementary. The close proximity of the school to the Extension Center made it possible for the children to walk safely to the site. Weekly, hands-on sessions covered plant basics, soil preparation, seed spacing, and plant maintenance - lessons that reinforce academic subjects such as math and science. Students prepared grass head dolls with recycled soft drink cans. In another session they created their own custom clay pots. Seed saved from last year’s crop of marigolds were sown in mid March and transplanted in May just in time for 
Mother’s Day gift giving.
