North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center, and the Robeson County Crop Promotion Association recently hosted the 52nd Annual Awards and Recognition Banquet on March 12 at the O. P. Owens Agriculture Center. This year’s guest speaker was Dr. Marshall Stewart, Special Assistant to the Dean and Director of College Leadership and Strategy in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Stewart provided an exciting look at how NCSU is working to meet the grand challenge of doubling the food supply over the next 35 years to feed a population estimated to be at nine billion. This new vision, dubbed as the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative, is based on an interdisciplinary systems approach, which would use the best minds from academia and industry working together at a proposed, brand-new research complex to be located at the heart of NCSU’s world-renowned Centennial Campus. North Carolina State University has the largest plant-breeding program in the world. According to Dr. Stewart, with North Carolina’s agricultural diversity, climate, soils, and strong agricultural economy, the opportunity exists to establish itself as a world leader in plant sciences that would have a tremendous impact on North Carolina’s economy.

Twelve farmers and the local Natural Resources Conservation Service were recognized at this year’s banquet. Joey Bruce of Lumberton was recognized as the 2014 Farmer of the Year. The 2014 Young Farmer of the Year Award went to Matthew King of St. Pauls. Ricky and Jan Shooter, along with their son and grandson Keith and Will Shooter, all of Rowland, were selected as the 2014 Family Farm of the Year. The Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award went to the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service. Jeremy Roston, District Conservationist, accepted the award on behalf of the staff, which includes Chip Campbell, Justin Rozier, Linda Bunnell, and Joanna McPhatter. The Distinguished Educational Service to Agriculture Award went to Bo Stone of Rowland.

Other farmers who were recognized included:

  • Locklear Brothers Farms (Henry, Adrian, and Donovan) for winning first place in the Irrigated Corn Yield Contest. Moore Brothers Ag (Eddie and Luther Moore) placed second, and P&S Farms (Tommy and Bo Stone) placed third.
  • P&S Farms was also recognized for winning first place in the No-Till Dryland Corn Yield Contest followed by Landon Moore in second place.
  • Lacy Cummings won first place in the Conventional Dryland Corn Yield Contest while Mitch and Garrison Britt took home second place.
  • P&S Farms won first place in the Soybean Yield Contest followed by Lee Moore in second place and Lacy Cummings in third place.
  • Lacy Cummings won first place in the Wheat Yield Contest followed by Pat Shooter in second place and Moore Brothers Ag in third place.

The Annual Awards and Recognition Banquet would not be possible without the support of the many local

agribusinesses that make up the Robeson County Crop Promotion Association. Special recognition was given to Kevin Kinlaw, Cape Fear Farm Credit Branch Manager – Lumberton and Whiteville, for his leadership in serving as the association president from 2013-2014. If you or your business have been a part of this great organization, I would like to extend a sincere thank you for your support and many contributions that recognize the number one industry in Robeson County and the men and women who make it possible.
